How to Make a Baby Bed Safely

How to Make a Baby Bed Safely

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Being pregnant is a new, fun and, above all, exciting time in which many changes take place. Not only physically, but also in your house. For example, you will probably be looking for inspiring ideas for furnishing the baby room. You may have already thought of the most necessary items such as a crib or cot, changing table and wardrobe. Did you know that bedding for the baby bed is also important to think about? That is why we have listed the most important tips for you.

PREPARE FOR A SAFE BABY BED

The baby who is still growing nice and warm in your belly, will soon be born. It is important that you can let your little darling sleep comfortably and safely in the crib or cot, so that he or she has a good (night's) rest and can grow well.

Beautiful decoration in the nursery room is of course nice, but the most important thing is that your child sleeps safely. That is why it is advisable to make the bed of your little one as simple as possible. Put as few accessories as possible, such as hugs and other loose things in the crib. This way your little one will fall asleep as safely as possible.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR BABY'S BED STEP-BY-STEP:

  • MATTRESS PROTECTOR COVER OR SHEET

Place a breathable mattress protector on the baby mattress. A moisture-proof mattress protector is not recommended for small babies. With a mattress protector you extend the usability of the child's mattress and keep it clean longer (more hygienic).

  • FITTED SHEET

Lay a fitted sheet over it and make sure it fits tightly around the mattress. Jersey fitted sheets of 100% cotton can stretch a little and are a very good choice.

  • BLANKET OR SLEEPING BAG?

BABY BLANKET

For years, babies have been put to sleep under a sheet with blankets. It is important that the sheet is made of cotton. The crib blanket can vary in material (think of cotton or wool). As long as it is breathable and not too hot or too cold. In the summer choose cotton, which is highly breathable and ensures a comfortable sleeping temperature during the warmer months. In winter you can provide extra warmth by using a wool blanket over a cotton sheet. You can also use a blanket as a handy play mat or rug (with an anti-slip mat).

SLEEPING BAG

You can also choose to have your child sleep in a sleeping bag. A sleeping bag is useful, because it keeps your baby warm without being able to turn around or kick the blanket away. When purchasing a sleeping bag, take the seasons into account. In the winter you have sleeping bags with sleeves that are made of a thicker material. For the summer you have sleeping bags without sleeves, made of a thinner and lighter material.

NO DUVET AND PILLOW FOR THE FIRST 2 YEARS!

A duvet is not recommended for children up to 2 years. A blanket in a duvet cover is allowed. Make sure that the blanket fits well in the cover and that you put it in properly. When your child moves from a crib to a toddler bed, you must replace the sleeping bag with a toddler comforter.

  • PLACING YOUR BABY IN THE CRIB

When you choose to let your baby sleep under a sheet with blanket, make the bed short and tight. That is, the feet should be placed at the foot of the bed and the sheet and blanket should not be higher than the shoulders. Tuck the sheet and blanket in well on the sides and bottom. Avoid  under the mattress at the foot end, otherwise your child will not be completely flat.

THE BEST SLEEPING POSITION FOR YOUR BABY

Always place your baby on his or her back in the crib, as advised by the maternity care and the clinic. In this way the face is free. If your child prefers not to sleep on his / her back, consult with the childcare center what you can do best.
